Spanning approximately 200,000 square kilometers the Thar is primarily located in northwestern India, extending into southeastern Pakistan.

The Thar Desert acts as a natural boundary, separating India and Pakistan. Its strategic importance is underscored by the historical tensions and conflicts between the two countries, particularly since the partition of India in 1947. The desert’s inhospitable terrain presents unique challenges for border security, necessitating a robust presence of the Border Security Force on the Indian side. The BSF is tsked with preventing infiltration and smuggling making its roles critical in maintaining national security. The BSF collaborates with intelligence agencies to monitor and disrupt potential infiltration attempts.

The harsh climate, with extreme temperatures and limited water sources, poses signific challenges for surveillance and patrolling. The BSF plays a vital role in maintaining peace and security in this strategically important region, engaging in a range of activities that address the complex security dynamics of the Thar Desert.
