India – the world’s largest democracy and the cradle of democratic values – is once again taking the lead in shaping global parliamentary dialogue and cooperation. From 14th to 16th January, New Delhi hosts the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth, CSPOC 2026 – a landmark gathering of parliamentary leadership from across the Commonwealth. Hosted by the Parliament of India, under the leadership of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, CSPOC 2026 is set to be the largest and most grand in the history of the forum. As many as 61 Speakers and Presiding Officers from Commonwealth nations and semi-autonomous parliaments are in attendance — including the Presidents of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. The Conference will be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15th January, underscoring India’s growing role as a global champion of democratic values and parliamentary cooperation. This year’s CSPOC focuses on some of the most pressing and contemporary challenges facing legislatures worldwide, The use of Artificial Intelligence and social media in parliamentary functioning, Innovation and citizen participation in democratic institutions And the security, health, and well-being of Members of Parliament. Over the next 60 minutes, we will talk about – the relevance of these themes in today’s rapidly evolving political landscape, the evolution of CSPOC since its creation in 1969, and how this unique forum continues to empower parliamentary democracy, strengthen institutions, and deepen global parliamentary cooperation.
