Indian aviation sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. India is currently the third largest domestic aviation market and is set to become the third largest overall by 2024. To boost the sector, the government is aiming to make flying accessible and affordable to every Indian in every part of the country. This has become possible with the UDAN scheme that has transformed the flying culture in the country. Under the scheme, the Airports Authority of India is developing at least 100 airports, water-aerodromes and heliports by 2024. With the addition of new air routes and airports, UDAN will establish strong aerial connectivity in all states and union territories, while laying the foundation of a new regional segment in India’s aviation market.
In the past few years, an aspirational middle class, rising number of low cost carriers, and better air connectivity to every part of the country has led to a steep rise in air passengers. The government is also looking for Public Private Partnership to build and manage new airports to meet the rising demand.
Even during Covid-19 pandemic, Civil Aviation played a key role in India’s fight against the coronavirus. Crores of Indians stranded across the globe were evacuated under the massive repatriation exercise, Mission Vande Bharat. Lifeline UDAN scheme ensured supply of vaccines, medical equipment, healthcare specialists across the country.
In this episode, we take a look at the current status of aviation in the country and the role it is playing in connecting not just the big cities but also the remote parts of the country and strengthening the economy.
