Shipbuilding acts as a catalyst for overall industrial growth due to spin offs to other industries, including steel, engineering equipment, port infrastructure, trade and shipping. The potential of the shipbuilding industry in employment generation and contribution to GDP is therefore tremendous. Cochin Shipyard was incorporated in the year 1972 as a fully owned Government of India company. In the last three decades the company has emerged as a forerunner in the Indian Shipbuilding & Ship repair industry. This yard can build and repair the largest vessels in India. Cochin Shipyard is strategically located midway on the international sea route, connecting Europe, West Asia and the Pacific Rim. It has evolved into a builder of large size vessels in India for the Merchant Navy and the Indian Navy. CSL has so far built a wide variety of vessels including Tankers, Bulk Carriers, Heavy Engineering Structures, tugs for various ports of India, Patrol Vessels, Passenger Vessels and Docking Pontoons.
