Over the past four years, India’s defence budget has steadily increased from Rs 4.71 lakh crore in 2020 to Rs 5.94 lakh crore in 2023. In the interim Budget presented in February this year, the Defence allocation surpassed Rs 6 lakh crore, constituting a little over 13% of the total Union Budget.
Reflecting a commitment to bolster defence capabilities amidst growing security challenges, India’s defence spending trajectory has been on an upward trend. The discussion is on whether there will be significant increase in the defence budget in the first budget of the Modi 3.0 government.
