On 15th August, 2019 Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address to the nation, announced ‘Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal’, to be implemented in partnership with States. The aim of the Mission is to make provision of tap water connection to every rural home and public institution by 2024.
The focus is on ‘assured and regular water service delivery at household level’, i.e. water supply in adequate quantity (55 litres per person per day) of prescribed quality (as per Bureau of Indian Standards) with sufficient pressure on a regular and long-term basis.
The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is based on a community approach to water and will include extensive Information, Education and communication as a key component of the mission. JJM looks to create a jan andolan for water, thereby making it everyone’s priority.
