Autism is a neuro-developmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in social communication and interaction, along with restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior or interests. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects nearly 1.8 crore Indians. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) estimates that 3% of India’s population is affected by ASD. Moving further from Autism Awareness, April has been recognised as Autism Acceptance month.
India needs to understand that Autism is not a flaw to be fixed, but a different way of experiencing the world. While challenges exist, so too do unique strengths, perspectives, and talents that enrich our communities.
In October 2023, the Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar took part in the inauguration of the Higashi Autism School in New Delhi. The programme talks about Autism Acceptance and Awareness in this backdrop.
