Dr. Gaurav Sharma, elected as the Member of Parliament for New Zealand’s Hamilton West in November 2020, created history by becoming the first parliamentarian of Indian origin taking an oath in Sanskrit. Hailing from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, 33-year-old Sharma was the candidate of the Labour Party. Sharma’s family moved to New Zealand when he was 13 years old. Involved with the New Zealand Labour Party for a long time, Sharma is a bachelor of medicine and surgery and works as a general practitioner in Hamilton.
