The Constitution of India provides for six Fundamental Rights.
Fundamental Rights are the essential feature of a free society. They were included in the Constitution to ensure the development of the personality of every individual and to preserve human dignity.
Writers of our constitution regarded democracy to be of no avail if civil liberties, like freedom of speech and religion, were not recognised and protected by the State. Fundamental rights guaranteed to all the citizens of India ensures freedom of public opinion that is the bulwark of any democracy. Rights are often considered fundamental to civilisation, being regarded as the established pillars of society and culture.
But the rights have real meaning only if individuals perform duties. A duty is something that someone is expected or required to do. In fact, rights and duties are two wheels on which the chariot of life moves.Thus any right comes with an unstated, implicit obligation to show respect for the rights of others.The obligations that accompany the rights are in the form of duties.
