In this episode of the Perspective Prog. Based on ‘Unplanned Urbanization and Flood Impacts’. Inundated roads, waterlogged streets, tractors ploughing through flooded localities ferrying people…that’s the kind of mayhem caused by heavy rains in Bengaluru. As people struggle to get to offices, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has cited “unprecedented rainfall and overflowing” water bodies for the deluge. He said this was the highest rainfall in the last 42 years, leading to all 164 tanks in Bengaluru being filled to the brim. While assuring of his government’s commitment to restore normalcy, the Chief Minister also faulted the maladministration of the previous Congress governments for the present situation of the city, known as India’s IT hub. The question is: Is the situation new? Isn’t it pretty much the same situation every year when heavy rains and floods bring the city to its knees. And not just Bengaluru, perhaps it’s become a common problem in perhaps every metro city today. Year after year we are witnessing a similar situation in different cities. So what are we doing to address this huge problem of urban flooding? What are the factors contributing to this challenge and what is the solution?.
