External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told an all-party meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday. The minister said the matter pertains to a very close neighbour and given the near proximity, India is naturally worried about the consequences, the spillover it has for us. Our southern neighbor, as you’re all aware, is facing its worst economic crisis in seven decades, with a severe foreign exchange shortage hampering the import of essentials, including food, fuel and medicines. Amid public revolt against the government for mismanaging the economy, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is the Acting President until the country elects a new President this week. What will be the outcome of Wednesday’s vote? Who is likely to win the three-way contest, and most importantly – amidst this massive crisis, what will the new President have to do to pull the country out of this turmoil?
