In this episode of the Perspective Prog. based on ‘Democracy 2022: Battle for States’. 2022 is all set to be a power-packed election year with assembly elections lined up in seven states. The year begins with elections in five states UP, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur in February-March and draws to a close with assembly polls in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat in November-December. The outcome of these results will have a significant bearing on the political landscape in 2022 and beyond, going into the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Of the seven states that go to the polls this year, BJP is in power in all barring Punjab and their focus will be to retain the pole position. In the opposition camp Trinamool Congress has entered the Congress turf in Goa, Aam Aadmi Party is challenging the Congress in Punjab and also trying to carve out a space for itself in Uttarakhand and Gujarat. The outcome of these Assembly polls will also have a huge bearing on the Congress’s position among the opposition parties. It will be a significant electoral year not just for the Congress but for other prominent regional satraps too such as Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati and the Badals.
