The new year opened with a joint statement by China, Britain, France, Russia and the United States or the P5 nations on January 3, to work together toward ‘a world without nuclear weapons’ The five countries affirmed that ‘nuclear weapons – for as long as they continue to exist – should serve defensive purposes, deter aggression, and prevent war.’ In this episode of Diplomatic Dispatch Vikas Swarup examines the joint statement and other nuclear related issues.
